About 80 Thais in the US, who
were mostly college students, formed
the Free Thai Movement with founding
capital of US$ 2 million. Ambassador
Seni was its chairman and responsible
for any form of political movement.
Major Khap Khunchon who was an
assistant to the military attaché was
responsible for military movement,
and acted as the Thai coordinator.
The USA provided intelligence
training through Major Nicol Smith of
the Department of Military and
Civilians of the Office of Strategic
Service (OSS). He was the commander
representing the US government in the
volunteer army of the Free Thai
Movement. After the members of the
Free Thai Movement received their
intelligence work, their mission was to
secretly enter Thailand.
In June 1942, Mani Sanasen was
appointed by M.R. Seni Pramoj to travel
from America to Great Britain to set
up the Free Thai Movement’s Office
in that country. This followed requests
from Thais living in Great Britain.
